Choosing Between Vinyl and Wood Fencing

If it is time to replace fencing, there is no doubt that you have many options. When considering the pros and cons, homeowners are often stuck between vinyl and wood fencing in Carlsbad, NM. Both have their positive attributes, and also their challenges. Here are six factors to consider when deciding between vinyl and wood fencing:

  • Appearance: Both options have tremendous appeal when it comes to appearance. It depends on what matters to you most. Vinyl looks new longer, and you can embellish it with different styles and elaborate toppers. However, if you want a natural garden look, vinyl will detract from that. Wood offers split and picket rails and blends in well with foliage. But it can also degrade if you do not take care of it, and that will detract from your home’s curb appeal.
  • Privacy: Vinyl is the best option if you value your privacy. It does not leave gaps, and it is finished on both sides so your neighbor does not have to see the less attractive “back” side. Wood settles and warps, and that eventually leaves space between the panels and reduces privacy.
  • Installation: Wood fencing is a specialist project. Contractors need a variety of tools and skills to complete it successfully. It will look nice when it is done, but the complex installation process costs more in labor and material. Vinyl is quick to install and nearly goes together like a Lego project. If you make it a DIY job, it is easy even for inexperienced homeowners. For contractors, it installs much more quickly, and that reduces labor costs.
  • Longevity: Vinyl is the clear winner here. Even if you ignore it completely, it will last up to 100 years. Wood may last 20 years if you stay current on maintenance. While some lumber varieties may last longer, it will never hold out as long as vinyl.
  • Strength: The biggest threat to vinyl is high wind. Lack of spacing between panels does not allow drafts to get through, so if the wind picks up, your fence will take a beating. However, vinyl is impervious to pests, inclement weather and fungus. Wood is vulnerable to extreme temperatures, pests and rot, but the spacing in the panels keeps it safe from wind. You need to keep up with sealing and maintenance to ensure environmental elements do not take down your fence.
  • Maintenance: If you want a fence requiring minimal maintenance, vinyl is your best choice. There are no spaces for dirt and leaves to get stuck, and you can make it look new again with soapy water and a pressure washer. Since it shows stains readily, you may need to perform these cleanings frequently. Wood barely shows dirt, but it will catch debris in the spaces. You may not always find dirt in the porous areas, and that may reduce the strength of your fence.
