The Dos and Don’ts Of Setting A Fence Post
A well-constructed fence can provide privacy, define property lines and add curb appeal. But before you start putting up your fence, learn how to set your fence posts properly to ensure that they last and look their best.
DO Select The Right Type Of Wood
The type of wood used to construct a fence has a lot to do with its durability. Selecting a sturdy type of lumber that’s resistant to moisture, sunlight, and weather extremes is essential to ensuring the longevity of your new fence. Pressure treated or unstained wood are both options that can be selected to meet your needs and budget. Pressure treated lumber is chemically treated to inhibit fungal decay that results in rot. Untreated wood, on the other hand, is a more natural choice for your fencing project. It’s a popular option for the look of a wooden fence, and it can also repel insects with its natural oils. However, this type of wood can cost more than pressure treated wood. So, it’s important to consider your budget when choosing a material for your fence.
DON’T Make Postholes Too Small
When setting a fence post, make sure you dig the hole right. This is one of the most important factors for ensuring the stability of your fence and keeping it secure. Grab a post-hole digger or power auger and dig a hole that’s one-third the length of your post deep and three times the width of it. Then fill each hole with gravel, which creates better water drainage and helps prevent rust and rot. Next, add about six inches of gravel to the base of each hole to provide even more drainage and reduce rot. Then tamp down the base layer with a piece of lumber.
DO Employ A Base Gravel Layer
A base gravel layer can be poured into the bottom of each fence post hole. This will help to prevent the post from rusting. The layer should be at least six inches deep and tamp down level. This will create a drainage mound that helps to keep the post from sitting in water during heavy rains. A base gravel layer will also be necessary if you plan to set your posts in concrete. This will ensure that they are strong and sturdy and can stand up to the weather.
DON’T Rush The Process
If you want to install a fence that will last, you need to make sure it’s properly supported. You can do this by using stout posts that are set deep into the ground at key spots, like corners, curves, dips and rises. The most common mistake homeowners make when preparing to build a fence is not taking the time to think through every step. This leads to mistakes that can lead to a fence that will not stand up to the test of time and may even need to be replaced. Another issue is ensuring that each post is perfectly straight. If a line post is crooked or an anchor post is not straight, it can cause your fence to bow and eventually need to be replaced.
